So let’s take a look at Vitamin B – well actually it is not just one vitamin.  Vitamin B consists of a group of vitamins namely  B1, B2, B6. B12, Folic Acid,  Niacin (B3), Panthothenic Acid (B5) and Biotin.  All these vitamins make up what is known as B Complex.

The B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins.  Water-soluble vitamins cannot be stored by the body and need to be ingested every day.

B vitamins do not provide the body with fuel for energy, however they do help the body to use the fuel to provide energy.  Some of the B vitamins form part of the coenzymes that assist certain enzymes in the release of energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins.  Other B vitamins play a big role in metabolism.  Others help cells to multiply – some of these cells being the red blood cells and cells that line the gastrointestinal tract – cells that deliver energy to all the others.

The B complex group of vitamins all work together synergistically like one big happy family. An excess in one could produce a deficiency in another.  For this reason, if you decide to take a Vitamin B supplement, it would be better to choose a B Complex rather than individual B vitamins.

A shortage of one of the B complex group of vitamins can hinder many metabolic processes – another good reason to take a B Complex.

So what can cause a deficiency in B Vitamins?

A diet high in refined carbohydrates, alcohol abuse, overuse of antacid drugs, the contraceptive pill, smoking and stress can all cause a deficiency in B vitamins

How do I top up my Vitamin B naturally?

You can increase your intake of the B vitamins by eating foods such as: liver, kidney, nuts, egg yolks, milk, dark green vegetables, pulses, wholemeal cereals, and fish.  But remember these vitamins need to be topped up daily!!

An outline of each of the individual B vitamins:

B1 (Thiamine) – Rapidly destroyed by heat – essential for complete aerobic release of energy from carbohydrates.

B2 (Riboflavin) – Concerned with carbohydrate and protein metabolism, especially in the eyes and skin.

B3 (Niacin) – helps in breakdown of fats, inhibits the production of cholesterol, and is associated with energy-releasing reactions in cells.

B5 (Pantothenic Acid) – involved in energy production, production of anti-stress hormones, controlling fat metabolism. formation of antibodies, maintaining healthy hair, skin and nerves

B6 (Pyridoxin) – crucial to blood formation and energy production and has anti-depressant and anti-allergy functions.

B12 (Cyanocobalamin) – essential for production of red blood cells which carry oxygen to al other cells in the body, needed for making use of protein, detoxifies smoke and other toxins in food

Folic Acid – Only a very small amount of Folic Acid is stored in the body and as it is essential for DNA synthesis, when it is lacking then cell division is impaired and it can lead to anaemia.

Biotin (an unofficial B Vitamin) – associated with the metabolism of carbohydrates

Lots of these vitamins can lose their goodness into the water when boiled.  A better method of cooking which will help to keep from destroying the vitamins would be to steam them.
